Kyrgyzstan has many land border crossings as it shares borders with four neighboring countries – Kazakhstan, China, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Each of these borders has checkpoints with different operating hours and crossing features.
Some border crossings are located in remote mountainous areas where conditions can be challenging. For example, high mountain passes such as Kyzyl Art, Torugart and Irkeshtam are located far from large population centers. This requires additional preparation and route planning to ensure comfortable and safe travel.
If you are planning a trip through such checkpoints, we strongly recommend that you arrange transfers to or from the border in advance. This is especially important in winter, when weather conditions such as snowfalls and ice can affect travel.
Please note that checkpoint opening hours may vary depending on the season, which should also be taken into account when planning your trip. Before departure, it is advisable to clarify up-to-date information about the work schedules and features of crossing a specific checkpoint in order to avoid unpleasant surprises along the way.
